3 Events We’re Excited for at GDC 2021

July 20, 2021

Get ready gamers: The Game Developers Conference (GDC) is back and better than ever. From its humble beginnings as a chat on Chris Crawford’s couch, to a now widely anticipated global event, we’re ready for the roundtables and panels all about gaming.

As a company with a passion for inspirational mobile gaming, we’re pumped for GDC 2021.

Our Marketing Coordinator Hannah says, “I’m looking forward to hearing from experts on the future of mobile gaming! It’s always exciting to hear about new innovations in tech. It will also be cool to learn new strategies for marketing games.”

With this in mind, here are three things that have us super excited for the 2021 conference:

1.  Playtika’s Secret Sauce for Successful Mobile Game Growth

Creating an engaging game that keeps players coming back for more is not always the easiest task. Luckily, Playtika is going to be diving into this topic on Tuesday, July 20th. The company’s head of Boost Platform, Amir Yagil, will be providing his secret recipe for successful mobile game growth. Also up for discussion – how the company managed to develop 9 of the top 100 highest grossing mobile games in the US.

A discussion about the best monetization, data analysis, and marketing strategies for mobile games and how to unify these factors to leave gamers wanting more is on the agenda. We can’t wait to see what strategies Mr. Yagil will be sharing with developers everywhere!

 2.  The Future of AAA and Mobile Gaming

Over the past year, the mobile gaming industry has flourished. Due to this recent success, one might wonder: can mobile games ever be AAA? With new futuristic and innovative technology, we believe it’s possible.

Our Software Engineer Lead, David believes that “mobile gaming can already be classified as AAA with games such as Call of Duty: Mobile and Minecraft for mobile devices, since they were created by major publishers.”

Imagination Technologies along with Game Dev London will be hosting a panel to discuss the future of mobile gaming and if it’s possible to nudge the industry into an AAA direction.

You won’t want to miss this. Attendees will receive insights from experts in the gaming industry. They’ll also learn about the differences between mobile, PC, and console game development and how the traditional sense of AAA games pertains to the future of the mobile industry.

 3.  The 21st Annual Game Developers Choice Awards

Brace yourselves: The 21st annual Game Developers Choice Awards are coming! The event awards the best in the industry for their creativity, innovation, and artistry. The Game Developers Choice Awards were introduced 20 years ago in March 2001. Year after year, it continues to recognize the outstanding work of gaming professionals from around the world.

The two types of awards presented are the Special Awards and Main Category Awards. The Special Awards consist of the Lifetime Achievement, Pioneer, and Ambassador awards.

Main Category Awards consist of Game of the Year, Innovation, Best Debut, Best Audio, Best Design, Best Technology, Best Visual Art, Best Narrative, Best Mobile Game, and Best VR/AR Game.

This year’s award ceremony will happen on Wednesday, July 21st. Did you know the first Mobile Game Award was presented in 2007 to The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass? The latest game to win the award was in 2019 to the single-player iOS game “What the Golf?”.

Gamers, it’s your turn! We want to know which category you’re excited for and which game you would like to see take home the win. It’s an inspiring time to be passionate about the gaming industry, and it’s wonderful to see the efforts of talented gaming professionals being recognized.

Final Thoughts

GDC is an amazing event for anyone in the gaming industry. We can’t wait to see everything the conference will have to offer this year!

What has us at the edge of our seats? The future of mobile gaming and how the rising success of the industry will define upcoming mobile game trends. What excites you most about GDC 2021?

4 Popular Mobile Gaming Trends to Look Out For

October 20, 2021

We’re happy to report that the mobile gaming industry has been bringing its A-game to the table lately (pun intended).

Partly due to the pandemic, mobile gaming revenue has skyrocketed and has only been leveling up since then.

According to AdColony.com, “The State of Mobile Gaming 2021 says revenue growth only accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic and users spent more than $22 billion in mobile games in Q1 2021”.

We’re about to throw more amazing statistics your way!

Did you know that just like social media and fashion, mobile gaming has trends, too? Here are four popular mobile gaming trends to look out for.

1. Gaming is Becoming More Inclusive

If you’ve ever played Words With Friends with your sweet, adorable grandma, you know this is true. The convenience of not being tied down by components like wires, consoles, and controllers makes mobile games so versatile for every generation. The simplicity of being able to download multiple games from different genres and play with anyone regardless of age is definitely appealing.

Not to mention, there are more than just first-person shooter games. From interior design and gardening to caring for pets, games appeal to more niches than ever before. Did you know there’s an entire genre dedicated to cozy games? 80% of downloaded games in 2020 were casual and only 11% were action/shooter games.

Whether you’re a busy mom trying to relax, a stressed college student looking for a creative outlet, or a kid that just loves gaming, there’s a game out there waiting for you in the App Store.

2. 5G Is Here to Spice Things Up

Innovation struck the mobile world yet again due to the 5G rollout last year. Newzoo’s Global Mobile Market Report tells us that more than 700 million smartphones will be 5G-compatible by the end of 2021, with no intention of slowing its roll.

Within the next two years, it is predicted that over 2.1 billion mobile phones will be 5G-compatible (which is pretty awesome if you ask us).

How exactly does this 5G technology benefit mobile games? We’re here to fill you in!

5G technology offers low latency, high speed connectivity, and a higher bandwidth to mobile phones, ultimately improving game performance and providing a better multiplayer experience.

So get excited, your gaming sessions with your besties are about to get a major upgrade in the near future!

3. More Hyper-Casual Games Are Being Released

According to Sensor Tower, in 2020, hyper-casual games were responsible for one-third (31%) of global downloads, equating to 6.3 billion downloads.

You might be wondering: what makes hyper-casual games so popular? Due to the simplicity and ease of use while playing, these games can certainly be highly addictive and not to mention, lots of fun.

If you find yourself stressed and in need of some relaxation, a fun hyper-casual game might be just what you need to melt all those troubles away. The next time you’re on the subway, glimpse over and you can probably find at least one person playing a hyper-casual game.

4.  The U.S. Tops Mobile Game Spending

We’ve got another fun fact from Sensor Tower for you: The U.S. remains the top market for mobile gaming, having already surpassed Japan in 2019.

Revenue has surpassed $6 billion just this year and likely will only keep growing from here.

The pandemic has definitely played a big part in this monetary success, as it amplified player spending by 35%, according to Adcolony.com.

With the recent success of the mobile gaming industry, we predict that revenue in the U.S. will only continue to skyrocket, especially since AAA games are being introduced to the mobile platform.

We’re thrilled to see how mobile gaming will continue to prosper and make its way to the top.

Now that you’re aware of all of the recent trends that have been happening in our favorite industry, which one surprised you the most?

5 Tips for Creating your First Game in Unity

Looking for some tips to make your first game in Unity? If you’re like us and have a passion for gaming (if you’re reading this you probably do), it’s possible you’ve come across Unity. In the world of game development, Unity is known as one of the most-used game engines out there for developing games.

Our amazing team of creatives and developers have given us insights on Unity for beginners, and here’s what they had to say:

1. Unity is relatively easy to use

Our Software Engineer David advised, “Unity doesn’t have a big barrier of entry. One of its strengths is that it’s relatively easy to use.”

You might find yourself wondering how exactly something as complicated as game development can be smooth sailing. Here are a few main reasons why:

  • The game engine has a straightforward game-building process, especially for smaller and mid-sized games. Unity also provides developers with accessible features, such as an easy animation controller and direct importation of animation and 3D modeling files.
  • Correcting missteps is simple. Worried about making a mistake? Not to worry! The platform makes it fairly uncomplicated for developers to correct their blunders in only a matter of minutes.
  • If you’re struggling to find the time to put into developing your game, Unity might help. The game engine is faster and less time-consuming compared to other ones out there. This is an extremely helpful feature for people that develop games for fun or have another full-time career.

Now that you know how easy Unity is to use, what will you create?

2. Unity has features for beginners

Our Software Engineer Chuck said, “I wasn’t a game developer prior to this, but learning Unity was fairly fast and easy.”

If you find yourself trying to dip your toes into the pool of game development, Unity can be a great tool for you to learn the process. Unity is an ideal engine for beginners to work with because:

  • There are plenty of free assets to get you started. The Unity Asset Store offers a variety of free assets, making it easy for new developers to get started. A few of these assets include 2D hand painted packs, first and third person starter assets, default UI shader with fog, pixel car pack, road system package, along with many more!
  • You’ll have access to tutorials. If you’re a newbie to the game development world, you might find yourself feeling a little intimidated. Have no fear! Unity tutorials are here! Unity developers have access to a plethora of helpful online tutorials and step-by-step learning materials. This is an amazing resource for anyone who’s starting their journey out in developing games. The assortment of these extensive resources can help new developers master the program at their own pace and time.
  • Unity has an easy coding process that offers multiple languages. This “Unity Script” is straightforward and simple, allowing newer developers to learn the process relatively fast. The availability of premade inputs for coding also makes the Unity coding process smoother and more efficient.
  • It’s relatively affordable. For developers that don’t have a big budget to start out with, you’ll be getting a good bang for your buck!

3. You can develop games for multiple platforms and players

Kevin, our Systems Engineer said, “Unity is great at creating games for multi-platforms.”

Can’t decide what kind of game to develop? Not a problem! Whether you prefer to build a mobile, PC, or console game, Unity has what you’re looking for.

The game engine supports and incorporates all major platforms, which makes it so attractive to developers across the globe. Mobile developers may find themselves especially drawn to the program. Unity makes it quite easy for them to build games for both iOS and Android software.

Want your game to be played amongst friends? The more the merrier! Unity makes it so that developers can transform their single player into multiplayer games with ease.

Which platform will you build your game on?

Final Thoughts

If you’re at the beginning stages of developing your game, Unity might be a great resource for you to consider. Now that you’ve heard our side of things, we’d like to hear your thoughts! Developers, we want to know: will you build your first game with Unity?
